St. Catherine's of Lomice

St. Catherine’s Catholic Church of Lomice was named after the town of Lomice Czechoslovakia and was built in 1934-36. The stone was gathered locally and built with the blueprints of the pastor; He wanted an attractive church built of stone like those in the old country so that they might remember the “fatherland”. Slated for closure and demolition, the local supporters approached PND to help find a solution. An affiliate was organized, an a dialogue initiated with the Eastern Catholic Diocese. Eventually, through there enduring efforts, the diocese sold the building to the local group for preservation. The grant allowed Preservation Lomice to replace deteriorated shingles and stain shingles matching the existing stain. They also replaced a basement window in need of repair and tuck pointed cracks on the north side of the building. Currently the building is being used for one Sunday service a year, and special events. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Restoration Project Cost: $4,155.15
Prairie Churches Grassroots Grant: $1,955.00
Local Match: $2,200.15
