- Conference Registration -

Parking Near VCSU Campus
General parking for conference attendees will be located at the
parking lot by the footbridge on College Street. Handicapped parking
is available on the SW corner of McFarland Hall on Viking Drive and
in several well marked locations nearby.
- Silent Auction -
Preservation North Dakota Benefit
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Visit the items on display in the Alumni room on the second floor on
McFarland Hall. There you can bid on one-of-a-kind items, ND products, ND
Artist work, and much more. Sign up on the bid sheets for any items of interest
to you. Be sure to check back, and see if anyone has outbid you! The winning
bids will be announced during the Closing Plenary on Saturday, May 6 at 5:15
pm.

All educational sessions will be held in McFarland Hall on the campus of
VCSU located at 101 College Street. (refreshments will be provided)

“Extreme Restoration: How to Restore a Prairie Church for Less Than
$10,000.” – Dale Bentley Watch the images and hear the story
of this incredible rescue of an endangered church building. We did
this one because we wanted to prove that it could be done.
“Barn Again! Strategies in Preservation” -
Mary Humstone and Jim Lindberg Learn about the history and future of the
Barn Again! program in North Dakota. Success stories, awards, preservation
information and a question and answer session.

“Packaging a Heritage Tour” – Ed Ledohowski
Get ideas and learn about packaging a tour from our friends in Canada.
Mr. Ledohowski has created, promoted, and led many tours promoting heritage
tourism.

“Preservation Laws in North Dakota” – Susan
Quinell Preservation laws affect all of us working to preserve old structures.
Susan will discuss laws in North Dakota and how they will affect you and
how you can use them in your preservation projects. Come and ask questions!

“Buxton Bank: A Work in Progress” – Bobbi
Hepper-Olson This 1890s granite structure was built as the cornerstone
of Buxton. Buxton in Bloom hopes that the restoration and adaptive re-use
of this building will help to revitalize the small community of Buxton,
ND.
Concurrent Session Three

“Heritage Tourism and Historic Preservation in North Dakota” – Annette
Schilling Learn about how heritage tourism and historic preservation
work together to bring in tourism dollars to North Dakota.
“The Scenic Route to Economic Development” -
Bobby Koepplin, Mary Lee Nielson, Jerad Plesuk Learn how Valley City developed
and funded their National Scenic Byway and how that has lead to economic
development for Barnes County.

Join us for lunch at the VCSU Student
Center Cafeteria located at 230 Viking Drive. Menu is a hot lunch served
cafeteria style for $5.65. You must make sure to check this meal on your
registration form to reserve a lunch ticket.

Center has a selection of made to order grilled items and sub sandwiches,
along with a complete soup station, salads, and desserts. Pay as you go.

“Reading The Landscape: Teaching with Historic Preservation” -
Tom Isern Dr. Isern, History Professor at NDSU will discuss how to
put historic preservation to work teaching about our history. Explore what
we can learn about an area from its landscape.

“The Economics of Historic Preservation” -
Jim Lindberg Historic preservation is economic development. Discuss the
opportunities for historic preservation in North Dakota and how to work
with different civic groups to share the positive effects of historic preservation.

“Preserving Historic Storefronts” - Gordon
Menzies In many towns historic storefronts need attention. The presentation
will include; metal cornices, tuck-pointing, appropriate roofing, any pertinent
aspects of storefront renovations. Questions welcome at the question and
answer session.

“Need Money? Grants for Restoration Projects” -
Amy Munson, Carol Peterson, and Mark Schlenvogt. Everyone is looking for
money for preservation projects, and we know how hard it is to find. Come
and learn about some grant opportunities and ask questions to see where
your project fits.
Concurrent Session Six
3:00 pm - 3:50 pm
“Basics of Developing a Heritage Tourism Plan” -
Becky Leonard and Melanie Thornberg. Bring your tourism ideas in and learn
how to best make heritage tourism work for you. Develop a plan to bring
visitors into your area of the state. Learn what others are doing.
“The Arts and Historic Preservation” - Jason Lindell and James
Wolberg of New Bohemia, ND. These ND artists will share their success stories
of blending art and historic preservation by using historic buildings as
artist’s homes and studios.
- Featured Roundtable Discussion -
4:00 pm - 5:15 pm
“Historic Preservation 101 - an Architects Roundtable
Discussion” sponsored by the ND American Institute of Architects. -
James Lindberg (Moderator) Karla Aldinger, Michael Burns, Joel Davy,
Bobbi Hepper-Olson. Architects discuss the importance of historic preservation
and give examples from across the region. Learn about where historic
preservation is headed and how it will help shape communities in the future.
Bring your comments and concerns to the question and answer session.
- Closing Plenary -
5:15 pm - 5:30 pm
Winners of the Silent Auction will be announced immediately
following the roundtable discussion. Closing remarks by Preservation
North Dakota’s Co-Presidents, Barbara S. Lang and Susan Sigurdson.

craftsman at 106 5th Ave SW, 701-845-3171 The conference menu offers
your entrée choice of chicken or pork chop. The meal includes coffee
and dessert. ($9.00) Make sure to include this meal on your registration
form.
- Evening Entertainment -
7:30 pm - 8:15 pm
Navigating with Lewis and Clark - A tour of the night time
sky held in the VCSU planetarium located in the Rhoades Science Center building,
Room 310, at 101 College Street. This program explains how Lewis and Clark
used astronomy to navigate and map the Louisiana Purchase with remarkable
accuracy. Presentation by Wes Anderson.
