2004 Historic Preservation Success Stories!

Riverside Manor, Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, ND

The classical revival style, National Register of Historic Places listed, Riverside Manor was originally known as St. Michael's Hospital when it was built in 1907-08. The Nurses' Residence was added in 1913. In 1952 the hospital moved to new facilities and in 1953 the Sisters of St. Francis bought the buildings and converted them to an old-age home, St. Anne's Guest Home. In 1981, the Guest Home moved to new facilities in Grand Forks and the buildings were vacant and deteriorating for many years.

In 1994, MetroPlains Development acquired the property and restored the deteriorated buildings, converting them into apartments, and renaming the complex Riverside Manor.

When the proposed flood protection was planned, soil conditions did not allow enough room to keep Riverside Manor on the dry side of the levy. After a great deal of planning and cooperation between government and private groups, a new plan was devised, involving a brick flood protection wall adjacent to the structure. This wall allows the building to continue to be in use on the dry side of the levy.

Once again, the future looks bright for Riverside Manor and its residents.
